You don't need to stay with the Railroad past the point of no return. You do the couple initial missions, a couple side missions and you're good. It's definitely worth it as you can add the weave to your vault suit and then wear armor over it for a large boost. Seerk, you can mod certain undergarments AND wear armor.

Mar 6, 2016 @ 4:53pm. The courser armor is questionable as 'best' for two reasons: - It's heavy. - It cannot be worn with additional armor. Army or military fatigues can still get the +110/+110 of Ballistic Weave 5, are lightweight, and can be worn under whatever torso and limb armor you choose.
I think getting Ballistic Weave through the Railroad quests is theoretically a great idea. Depending on your armorer skill you can add a level (pretty high at rank 4) of energy and ballistic protection to regular clothing to give you more freedom to wear what you want in the wasteland without getting stomped.

As outfits, jumpsuits, and other fashion statuses are worn under more conventional armor in Fallout 4, this essentially lets a player wear two sets at once. It really seems like Ballistic Weave was meant to make outfits stand up a bit better to armor+clothing, and probably wasn't intended to be applied to hats at all, but again, someone [censored] up, we have some clothing and hats that can take it, and those just blow all the outfits out of the water in terms of defense since they stack with armor.

It seems like Bethesda designed Fallout 4 to be against fashion in every way they possibly could. Half the clothes are useless in the early game because you can't put armor over them.
